Unable to install PSE on Windows. Setup.exe says "This version of Photoshop Elements requires MS Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher to be installed". How to resolve?
This error may be shown while installing PSE (any version) on any OS. It is more frequent on Win XP. The error comes when we click on 'setup.exe', It shows an error dialog reading "This version of Photoshop Elements requires MS Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher to be installed". The correct answer to this problem is:
1. Open command prompt by 'Windows (logo)->All Programs->Accessories->Run'.
2. Type "regedit" in 'Run' dialog (as shown below) to 'Registry Editor':
3. Navigate to registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \App Paths \IEXPLORE.EXE. If this key does not exist, create a new String type key in App Paths named IEXPLORE.EXE as shown below:
4. Within the IEXPLORE.EXE key please make two changes:
a. Double click
on '(default)' entry shown and enter following strings:
Win XP (and 32 bit
versions of Win Vista or later): C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe”
Windows x64 (versions of Win Vista or later): C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE
b. Create a new
string called "Path" (as shown in step #3) then double click on the
new string and enter the following path:
Win XP
(and 32 bit versions of Win Vista or later): "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer:".
Windows x64 (versions of Win Vista or later): C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer:
Note: Please make sure you have the ":" at the end.
5. When finished, registry editor pane will look like:
Now you can close regedit and start with the installation.

Reinstalling w7 pro I had this same problem with installing PSE again ..which had worked fine before the reinstallation. Eureka moment was when I realised that it was IE11 update that was the problem......on W7 installation before I installed the PSE before the IE11 update ie IE 8 was in operation.....hence the solution for me was to uninstall the IE11 back to IE8 install PSE and then reinstall IE11 update......phew!....hope it works for you!......I so much prefer the old simpler versions of PSE...a lot less clicking! Early version of ACDsee and PSE work really well together and can get some serious work done....

I pressed 'CTRL F' and found the App Paths and typed in

but I still doesn't install photoshop.I am not that computer savy, I think I need more screen snap shots of the steps, ie it took me a while to search for New- String value which I later found in the edit tab at he top of the page.

ReplyDeleteIn second comment you are able to find 'App Paths' registry entry. Can you please make sure that the path to this registry entry is 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \App Paths \IEXPLORE.EXE'.
If the 'App Paths' entry is present at above mentioned path: Please make sure that there is ';' followed by string typed for 'Path'. That is the string which you need to enter in 'Path' is 'C/Program Files (X86)/Internet Explorer/IEXPLORE.EXE;'.
If the 'App Paths' entry is not present at above mentioned path: Right click the 'CurrentVersion' entry (which you found) and click on 'New->key'. Name this key as 'App Paths'. Now again, right click 'App Paths' and click on 'New->Key'. Name this key as 'IEXPLORER.EXE'. Now you can continue with step #3.

ReplyDeleteas described, but unfortunately it does not work and does not leave install PSE (error need MS Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher). I had already installed PSE in one pc windows 7 64bit (laptop Acer Aspire 7738G) and it worked great, now with a new PC (Windows 7 64 bit too) I can not. Perhaps it depends on the partition and the capacity of the hard drives?
It should have worked. Nonetheless please try this workaround. Install any other browser (say Chrome or Firefox). Make this as default browser and then try installing PSE. See if it works.

Hello, I am JUST NOW having this SAME problem. I've been able to install and re-install this exact same Adobe Photoshop Elements over the past several years with no problem, but now all of a sudden, I keep getting this same annoying error message. I followed the steps above exactly, but like everybody else, it does not work, nor does the work-about using other browsers. Can you PLEASE advise as to how to fix this problem? I don't understand why it is happening in the first place. I had to uninstall it temporarily and now I can't re-install it.

ReplyDeleteI'm on Windows 7 (64bit), IE11 installed.
When I checked the registry all the paths were already there.
I took a copy of iexplore.exe from a computer running XP and IE8.
I created the following path "C:\Program Files\Internet\" and put the IE8 iexplore.exe there.
Then I temporarily changed the default string in the registry to "C:\Program Files\Internet\iexplore.exe" and the path string to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer: "
I had to use a different path because I couldn’t change the name on the current iexplore.exe to temporarily use the old one.
I then ran the setup without any problem. After the installation was completed I changed back to the original values in the registry.
I think the problem is that Photoshop Elements doesn’t read the version of IE correct.
I know this requires access to a copy of and older version of iexplore.exe, but a thought I’ll let you know how I did it.

To summarise: collect a copy of iexplorer.exe from an old machine, create a new C:\Program Files\... directory to put it in, amend the registry keys, install PSE, restore the registry keys (and maybe delete the directory). My hiccough was dragging the iexplorer.exe and failing to notice dear old windoze has created me a shortcut rather than a copy. Ho hummm.
DeleteI wish I had a copy of IE8 running on another computer. Oddly enough the original instructions call for a colon in the path but reflect a semi-colon in the screenshot.

ReplyDeleteThe solution is here - http://forums.adobe.com/message/5806112#5806112 - slightly tedious because of all the restarts required, but it worked. I would add however that the updates for IE10 (and in my case IE 11 too) are to be found under "optional updates".

I'm getting the same message trying to install it on Windows 7 running IE11. Seems there's no way to temporarily install IE 4-8, the OS doesn't accept it in any way. If anyone could provide or point out to a final iexplore.exe file of one of these older versions (not the installer), I'd be happy!

DeleteI was just "messing around" again to install my old Photoshop Elements, but after I couldn't get any old IE version (exe file) from anywhere, I also saw that I couldn't uninstall IE11 first in order to install an older version myself. But, I found out that you CAN uninstall it from the Windows Update History, the IE11 was in the list and could be directly uninstalled by rightclicking on it. After rebooting the system, I was able to install an older version of IE (I tried 9, not 8, it worked), and so I could install my old Photoshop as well. I did not change the path in the registry because I simply forgot that to do, but it worked even without. Maybe the IE9 itself works already as it is and the path really doesn't need to be changed.
Thank you so much for your help, though, I wouldn't have find ANY solution without this blog (and other links within postings) :-)

For 64 bit Windows 10, the method updated by Anonymous on 5 April 2014 worked. The path needs to end with a semi-colon instead of colon.
