How to correct hourglass (generic) thumbnail in Elements Organizer??

In Elements Organizer, when you import media, after sometime the media thumbnails appear correctly. The time lag between importing media and getting thumbnails generated varies depending upon - number of media, file size, file resolution, file location (whether on internal drive or CD/DVD or on network).
But sometimes even after leaving Organizer idle for sometime, Organizer keeps on showing generic thumbnails. There can be two possibilities here:

  • The thumbnails are not available for those particular media (like audio, some video formats or image with higher resolution).
  • There appears to be some issue with thumbnail database in Organizer.

For first case, we can't do anything but if this is the second case (say for a JPEG of 2 MB having resolution 1024x768 thumbnail is not shown) then there is a workaround to resolve this. Please try following steps:

1. In Elements Organizer, click on 'Help->System Info'. Under 'Current Catalog', the catalog location is mentioned adjacent to 'Catalog Location' field as shown below:

2. Quit Organizer. In the catalog folder, you will see a file named 'thumb.5.cache' as shown below:

Rename 'thumb.5.cache' to say 'thumb.5_old.cache'. Relaunch Organizer.

Now Organizer will start generating thumbnails for all the media in your catalog. This process will take time so please be patient. Once Organizer is finished generating thumbnails, your issue (showing generic thumbnails for some media) will be resolved.
Please comment if your issue is not resolved.

  13. I am working on a Mac OS X El Capitan. I have just upgraded to a trial version of PSE 14 from PSE 9. I only have hourglasses in my Organiser - 25,870 items. I have tried the above fix but nothing has changed. I haven't used Organiser for a very long time so not sure it even worked with PSE 9 but would really like to use it again now that IPhoto has gone.
Do you have any suggestions as to how I can view the thumbnails please. When I click on the thumbnail the image is there but obviously I would like to see the images.
    Many thanks,
    Sue

  15. I have this same problem. I renamed and then tried moving thumb.5.cache, but as my catalog is rebuilding itself, the generic hourglass thumbnails start reappearing and when I check, the file is back in my catalog folder. Any suggestions are appreciated. I have windows 10 and Adobe PSE 14 and have been trying to convert a large catalog from pse 9 for over a month.

  16. It worked well and I thank you. Only one thing: the folder was hidden, and it took me a while to find out how to find it.

  22. OMG! For about a month now I have had the thumbnail cache problem (displaying the hourglass) in place of images. After troubleshooting for a few hours one day, reading endlessly, I gave up. Then I came across THIS gem of a troubleshoot, and behold---it WORKED! He explained it perfectly, with images, and I followed each step. Once I reopened my Organizer, all the thumbnail images came up!

  23. Can anyone assist with how to get this resolved on Mac OS High Sierra? I cannot find the path listed in the instructions. The example shown is Windows. I guess the file path is completely different in OS. It seemed to have occurred when I upgraded to High Sierra.

    1. Hi Brian,
I have intentionally made instructions to be OS independent. Not sure which paths you are referring to?

  24. This doesn't work for me because it says the file is open in elements 19 auto creation even though I am completely closed out of it.

  25. I couldn't rename the thumbnail cache. "The action can't be completed because the file is open in ElementsSmartTag." I have Elements 15.
